Taru Mäkelä began her career as a director in the Finnish Broadcasting Company. She wrote and directed a TV comedy series which drew over a million viewers each week, and which nowadays has cult status. After her success in TV, she continued as a freelance director of drama and documentary films. August Fools is her second feature, in which she collaborates with scriptwriter Raija Talvio and cinematographer Jouko Seppälä. Their first collaboration was the Suomi-awarded story about wartime love, Little Sister.
